This is another work of prolific industrial project Xalm Retribution that comes from Russian Siberia.

The work is called «Night Accident» and the title reflects the atmosphere of the album to a certain extent. «Night Accident» was conceived as a soundtrack to horror movie so its powerful dark ambient passages look like inspired by childish fears of darkness, ghosts, etc.

I downloaded this album and found it interesting enough to write a review and share my impressions of it.
1. Sound. There is neither melody (in common sense) nor harmony or rhythms but buzzing and completely dissonant sound sequences which create enveloping and precarious soundscapes providing a spacey feeling to a listener. This acoustic atmosphere involves one in the very centre of mystical events with superior thematic development and sheer psychological and emotional depth, so the narrative aspect of music is present here and is as good as it should be in a proper dark-ambient release following a particular storyline.
2. Associations. Personally, I perceive here some references to the mid-20th century classical avant-garde masterpieces such as Ligeti’s «Konzert fur Violin und Cello» and «Tren Ofiarom Hiroszimy» by Penderecki which were used in some of the critically acclaimed thriller movies such as «The Shining», «The Shutter Island» etc.
3. Conclusions. My favourite tracks are «Darkness in the Corner» – because of its metallic soundwaves and «The Wind Placed under the Door of a Child’s Room» – because of the idea of combining nervous whistling with calm droning which seems to be new in the genre. Perhaps this album might be used as a soundtrack for a horror movie or gloomy PC game, but I guess listening to this music with headphones in complete darkness of your room might be a starting point to face your childish fears again and learn – they are nothing more than human mind constructs…

Плодовитый сибирский автор множества звуковых работ, вдохновлённый детскими страхами к различного рода ночным несчастиям на промышленном объекте фильма ужасов. Итак, готовьтесь, что нас будут пугать различными бутафорскими спецэффектами и прочими синтетическими звуками из обширных цифровых архивов.
На самом деле, пугающего здесь ничего нет, альбом больше задумчивый и загадочный по ощущениям, с тревожной атмосферой сумерек. Неплохой уровень электронных звуковых полотен хорошо смотрелся бы в какой-нибудь низкобюджетной сюрреалистической короткометражке или в квестовой компьютерной игрушке прошлого века. Думаю, фанаты клавиатуры и джойстика оценят данную работу более чем положительно, ностальгия – это очень сильная штука, как ни крути.

Düstere Ambientklänge sind es, an denen sich hier ein gewisser Sergey Pakhomov versucht.

Es fällt schnell auf, dass die Umsetzung zwar nicht schlecht geworden ist, allerdings mitunter doch recht minimal. Keine Samples, keine Taktgegebenheit – die Welt in «Night Accident» wird somit ausschließlich mit elektronischen Mitteln erzeugt. Dies kann durchaus gut funktionieren; ein «Ghost In The House» lässt grüßen, kriecht jene Darbietung doch wahrhaft gespenstisch aus den Boxen.
Auch «The Wind Placed Under The Door Of A Child»s Room» vermag zu überzeugen und vermittelt etwas an Bedrohlichkeit, während das folgende «The Clocks Alive At Night» dem in nichts nachsteht.
«The Woods Are Dark» versprüht dann schon eine Art Filmcharakter, gehört dennoch zur Kategorie «verzichtbar», passiert doch nicht wirklich Nennenswertes.

Der Gesamteindruck auf diesem Werk ist dabei recht ruhiger Natur, wenn auch hier und da düstere Momente durchblitzen. Was mir aber manchmal etwas fehlt, ist ein Funken Leben, etwas Rhythmisches.
So passiert es eben auch, dass so mancher Augenblick mitunter etwas in die Länge gezogen wirkt, was unter anderem auf das komplette Fehlen von sogenannten Überraschungsmomenten zurückzuführen ist. Nichts ist tödlicher für ein Dark Ambient Album, als Spannungsarmut, da gibt es nichts drum herum zu reden. Und auch «Night Accident» leidet eben manchmal unter dieser Krankheit, wenn auch nicht permanent.
Dennoch wäre es somit sicherlich bei zukünftigen Veröffentlichungen von Vorteil, das Ganze vielleicht noch mit diversen Elementen auszuschmücken.

Ein interessantes Projekt ist mit Xalm Retribution aber fraglos am Start, nur dass dieses Teil neben einigen guten Momenten auch so seine kleinen Schwächen hat.
Die Zukunft wird zeigen, welchen Weg der Musiker weiter geht. Freunde des sinisteren Dark Ambient sind dennoch auf eine kleine Gruselstunde eingeladen.

Continuing the trend of excellence.
This album by Xalm Retribution is a fantastic piece of dark ambient. Sometimes cinematic, always ominous, this represents the higher end of the genre. Their earlier albums are very good, but this is better! You will not be disappointed.
